Mr. Bonner saw Erkkie’s natural talent as a hairdresser and saw how fast she caught on to learning chemical services. In 1979, with Mr. Bonner leading her and making her study more about the chemistry of hair, she began to work on models, perfecting how the hair reacted using chemicals. Soon she would be sought out as a Third Party Verifier for hair straightening products for major hair companies as a consultant and a technical troubleshooter. Her knowledge and skill helped these hair companies to better formulate their products for the consumer.

Erkkie found that many consumers who had hair chemical services (such as bleaching, perming, coloring, chemical relaxing/straightening), had a change to the quality and condition of their hair. This was concerning because many hairdressers were performing double chemical processes on the hair, manufacturers started selling more and more products directly to the consumer, and consumers were treating their own hair without the knowledge of how this would affect the scalp and hair.

In 1984 Erkkie began to see a trend happening in the hair industry, and it was beginning to make her ponder and ask deeper questions about those changes and the cause of hair loss. In her salon, she always had her clients fill out an intake form, with questions geared towards getting to the root cause of the increasing hair loss. This rising problem was something even dermatologists and nutritionists could not help with, because they too had limited training and knowledge. On a trip to San Francisco, Erkkie was shopping in Imagnin department store and came upon a book that dealt with hair loss causes and symptoms. That is when she discovered the science of Trichology. This book would propel her to sell her business and move across the Atlantic ocean where her journey would begin in London and move on to France in her study to become a trichologist.

Now close to three decades later, Erkkie Harris-Wells is one of the most sought Trichologists in the US.
